The Fifth Solvay Physics Conference was attended by some of the greatest scientists of the time.

Bohr, creator of the solar system model of the atom, was a proponent of quantum theory. His explanation of superposition had satisfied many of the physicists at the conference. The notable exception was Einstein. They would have a running battle on the topic until Einstein’s death in 1955.

Heisenberg, author of the uncertainty principle, was in attendance. His theory was new, but it clearly stated that the very act of observing an object at the subatomic level alters the reality being observed. This happened because the measuring device emitted particles of its own, which then interacted with the particles being observed. It made it impossible to accurately measure more than one property of a particle at a time. Because of this, Heisenberg concluded that you could work with only probability and mathematical formulas. (Schrödinger had reached a similar conclusion with his wave theory.) Bohr struggled with Heisenberg’s theory until he concluded that there could be a dual nature to a particle. However, it would only be possible to observe and measure one aspect of the particle. Ultimately, Heisenberg and Bohr had developed theories that were compatible. Together their theories, known as the Copenhagen interpretation, formed the foundation for quantum theory.
